Dark mode offers some great advantages over light mode. But of course there are some disadvantages, too.
Dark mode apps can prolong the battery life of your smartphone, allowing you to use the app for longer periods of time. Google has confirmed that using dark mode on OLED screens has been a huge help for battery life. For example, at 50% brightness, the Dark Mode interface in the YouTube app saves about 15% screen energy compared to a flat white background.
In a dark environment, many people find using dark mode easier on the eyes. And it could reduce eye strain.
In dark mode, your pupil needs to expand to let in more light. When you see light text on a dark screen, its edges seem to bleed into the black background (called the halation effect), and it reduces the ease of reading.
If you have astigmatism in your eyes, this can make it difficult to read light text on dark backgrounds.
